A little black dress is an evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often quite short. Fashion historians ascribe the origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral colour. Its ubiquity is such that it is often simply referred to as the “LBD”.
Since the 20’s the little black dress has aged gracefully through fashion history, without a single wrinkle. From Coco Chanel to Alber Elbaz, every designer has created their own distinct version of the lbd, in their own perfect style over years.
The lbd is certainly timeless, essential and iconic. Every woman should have a lbd in her closet since it is a piece so versatile that can be worn on every occasion, from day to night with small alterations.
Look 1 – For the office: For your office look remember to keep it simple and smart formal. You can wear a classic beige trench coat, ankle boots and a large bag. Be prepared for cold weather with a cozy sweater. You can add some color with a silk scarf.
Look 2 – For drinks: A leather jacket and killer sandals is my suggestion for a night out for drinks. Add some color to your look with a clutch or jewelries and you are ready to party!
Look 3 – Night at the theater: For a fancy night out you can style your lbd with a faux fur and high heeled sandals. Finishing touches like a statement necklace or earrings or even a jeweled headband will immediately elevate your look.
Looks 4 – For brunch: The lbd can easily be dressed down for a Sunday brunch withh friends. Top it with a fun t-shirt, flat brogues and a green parka and you are ready to go!
